Course Description

ISS/CSC/MTH 481 (1) Senior Seminar

This one-unit capstone course is a seminar in which faculty members, some guests and the students give lectures on topics of general interest in information systems, computer science, and mathematics.

ETS Field Exam
The two hour ETS field exam will be given as a mid-term for the course. This exam covers a wide range of topics from your four years of course work. IS and CS majors will take the CS exam and Math majors will take the Math exam. Please note that the class will meet until 6:00 on February 14, the day of the exam. If you do not take an exam you will receive a zero for it. Late exams may be taken only by prior arrangement or with a documented emergency. The instructor must participate in the decision for you to miss the exam; this means that you need to call the instructor before missing the exam.

Reports
Near the start of the semester you will work with a faculty member in your major to select a topic for giving a written (5-10 pages) and an oral (20 minutes) report. This should be done using technology and terminology standard to your discipline. The reports will be scored by faculty using a rubric (which you will be shown in advance).

Grading Policies

Grading Distribution
ETS Field Exam 200 points
Oral Report 400 points

Grading scale. Grades are based on the number of points accumulated throughout the course.
Approximate minimal percentages required to obtain a given grade are:

Grading Scale in percentages
  A B C D
+   (87.5, 90) (77.5, 80) (67.5, 70)
  [92.5, 100] [82.5, 87.5] [72.5, 77.5] [62.5, 67.5]
- [90, 92.5) [80, 82.5) [70, 72.5) [60, 62.5)

Other factors that affect grades are

Attendance Policy.
After you miss the equivalent of 1 class period, you will be warned of impending de-enrollment. If you miss the equivalent of 2 class periods, you will be de-enrolled.

Classroom Attire .
All students are expected to dress in ways that make the classroom a place where all students are comfortable and can work efficiently. Distracting attire is not permitted in the classroom. For example, attire associated with the "rush" activities of fraternities and sororities simply causes too many distractions in the classroom. If you choose to "rush" one of the fraternities or sororities, please make sure the "rush" officials know that "rush" attire will not be allowed in this classroom.

Academic Accommodations.
All students are expected to meet the standards for this course as set by the instructor. However, students with learning disabilities who may need accommodations should discuss options with the Academic Support Center (ASC) during the first two weeks of class. The ASC will contact professors with suggestions related to classroom needs and accommodations. Approved documentation must be on file in the ASC prior to the start of the semester. All such arrangements must be completed within the first four weeks of class.

Cheating Policy
A student who is caught cheating on an exam or a report will receive a zero on that piece of work and may receive an "F" for the semester.

Summative Experience
We will meet for a summative experience.
